Empty urban lot - blight or oasis?

10th.Jul.2008 by Patti | 0

An article ran in the BBC about an organization in Detroit called Urban Farming.

They have a simple idea: turn urban wasteland - unused land - into free vegetable gardens. Engage neighbors in growing their own food. They eat MUCH better, they learn about food, they take pride in their effort and their neighborhood, they teach children and they engage socially.

The Urban Farming group is currently coordinating about 500 gardens across Detroit… that’s a lot of organic & local food being grown.

It transforms neighborhoods. It transforms individuals.

Locally we have City Slickers in Oakland and Victory Gardens in San Francisco.
Both are organizations working to make the land more productive and teach people how to grow their own nutritious, organic food.
